The Telangana High Court on Monday directed the Election Commission of India’s counsel to seek instructions in a writ petition that seeks to declare the issuance of notices to voters as part of a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) over minor discrepancies in the names recorded in the 2002 SIR.
The petition was heard by a bench of Justices P. Sam Koshy and Narsing Rao Nandikonda and was filed by two citizens, S.Q. Masood and Syed Wahid Uddin.
The petitioners argue that the Election Commission used methods other than those accepted by law to identify anomalies and dissimilarities for inclusion of citizens in the final voter list. They claim that they received notices because of a mismatch between the names of their fathers as listed in the current electoral roll and the previous SIR. According to them, authorities relied on an artificial‑intelligence based data‑matching platform integrated with the ECINet/ERONET system, a mechanical identification that they say undermines the constitutional framework.
The bench adjourned the matter to October 13 for the next hearing.
