Chandigarh, Oct 9 – The Punjab government has appointed 1992‑batch IPS officer Gaurav Yadav as the regular Director General of Police (DGP), the official order said.
Yadav had served as the officiating DGP since July 2022. The decision ends a prolonged period of uncertainty over the post, following a Punjab and Haryana High Court directive that an ad hoc arrangement should not continue indefinitely. The court had scheduled a follow‑up hearing for October 13.
The order states Yadav’s tenure will last a minimum of two years from the date he assumes charge. The appointment was made after the state’s Home Department forwarded a list of senior IPS officers to the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). The UPSC, in its July 1 letter, empanelled three officers from the state‑submitted panel for consideration.
Yadav’s name was one of the three officers shortlisted by the UPSC from a panel of fourteen senior IPS officers sent by the state. The other two shortlisted officers were Special DGP Sharad Satya Chauhan and senior IPS officer Harpreet Singh Sidhu. The UPSC’s empanelment committee sent back the panel of three officers for the state to select the regular DGP.
Following the issuance of the order, Punjab Police posted on X that Gaurav Yadav has assumed charge as Director General of Police, the head of the state police force.
