Agartala, Oct 9 – The government will begin restoration of Tripura’s only hydroelectric plant in December, Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced. The project, located in Gomati district, is estimated to cost 100 crore rupees.
The 2.5‑MW Gumti plant has been offline since the devastating floods of 2024, which caused extensive damage to the facility.
To assess feasibility, the government commissioned surveys from the National Institute of Technology, Agartala; the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati; the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation; and Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. Based on those studies, the decision to revive the plant at a cost of 100 crore rupees was made.
Restoration work will start in December, after which the plant is expected to generate 10–11 MW of power daily. Nath praised the National Dam Safety Authority for its awareness programme, underscoring the government’s commitment to downstream safety. The dam and its reservoir, originally built 56 years ago to harness the Raima and Sarma hill streams, have become a major tourist attraction.
