Restoration work on Tripura’s only hydroelectric power plant, the 2.5‑MW Gumti project in Gomati district, is set to begin in December at an estimated cost of ₹100 crore, Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath said on Friday. The facility has been offline since the 2024 floods that caused extensive damage, leaving the plant out of service for months.

To evaluate the feasibility of reviving the project, the government commissioned surveys from the National Institute of Technology, Agartala; the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati; the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation; and Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. The studies confirmed that restoration is viable and outlined the steps required to bring the plant back online.

The Ministry announced that work will start in December, with a projected output of 10‑11 MW of electricity per day once the plant is operational.

Nath also praised the National Dam Safety Authority for organising a dam‑safety awareness programme at Tirthamuk, underscoring the government’s commitment to safeguarding downstream communities.

The Gumti hydroelectric project, which was established 56 years ago by harnessing the Raima and Sarma hill streams, has become a major tourist attraction, officials added.
