On Tuesday, October 6, 2026, Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary directed officials to submit a detailed report on flood damage in Bihar. The directive was issued during a review meeting attended by Bharatiya Janata Party National President Nitin Nabin, both Deputy Chief Ministers Vijay Kumar Choudhary and Bijendra Prasad Yadav, and other officials.
Choudhary cited an unprecedented volume of water in the Ganga, Gandak and Son rivers, attributing the flooding to silt accumulation in riverbeds. He noted that Bihar is the first state in India to formulate a silt policy and stressed continuous monitoring of river conditions and flood damage.
He ordered an immediate submission of a preliminary report so that relief, rehabilitation and development works could be expedited. The DMD was instructed to gather damage assessments and restoration cost estimates from all relevant departments. Choudhary also directed arrangements to address issues after water drainage, and announced that compensation would be transferred to affected families on October 12, 2026.
Water Resources Secretary Chandrashekhar Singh briefed on the causes and phases of flooding, noting new peak levels in the Ganga, Son, Ghaghara, Kosi and Punpun rivers during the first phase, and peak levels at four Gandak sites in the second phase, with embankment damage in West Champaran, Gopalganj and Saran. Principal Secretary Santosh Kumar Mall reported on relief and rescue operations. Earlier that day, Choudhary criticised the Congress party and Rahul Gandhi during a youth dialogue in Rohtas, and he also inaugurated and laid foundation stones for development projects worth 400 crore rupees in the district.
