Police arrested a 40‑year‑old man, Nizam alias Nikki, a resident of South Bazaar in Kannur, on charges of being a key member of a drug distribution network operating in the district.
The arrest was carried out in Bengaluru by a team led by Town Inspector K.T. Akhil under instructions from District Police Chief B.V. Vijayabharath Reddy, Assistant Commissioner M.P. Azad and Town Inspector Mahesh Kandambeth. Nizam was taken into custody after police seized 153.379 grams of suspected MDMA in Mattannur on Monday, October 5.
Investigators had earlier received information that Nizam supplied drugs. A subsequent probe traced him to Bengaluru, leading to his arrest. He is also named as an accused in an August case involving the smuggling of 20.5 grams of MDMA from Bengaluru to Kannur. In that case, the drug was hidden inside a toy sent through a courier and was seized near Plaza Junction by Kannur Town police and the DANSAF team.
Police said the investigation confirmed that Nizam supplied the drug that was sold to A. Faisal, 33, a native of Pinarayi. Faisal disclosed that the narcotic had been brought from Bengaluru in a parcel.
