A mob attack in Siliguri’s Tarabari area on Sunday, October 4, 2026, left two men dead and three others wounded after locals accused them of cattle theft.
Around 3 a.m., a group of residents intercepted a pick‑up van, dragged out its five passengers, and chased them. The mob seized four of the men in the Dhimal Basti area and brutally assaulted them, killing one on the spot. The remaining passengers sustained severe injuries. During the confrontation the attackers set the van on fire.
One victim managed to escape and reached the Bagdogra police station. Police arrived shortly thereafter and transported the injured to a hospital, where a second victim later died.
The deceased were identified as driver Md. Shahid Akhtar, 45, of Chopra, and his associate Sajjad Mohammed, 28, from Haryana. Following a complaint filed by Akhtar’s wife, the Bagdogra police registered a first information report against unidentified individuals, charging them with murder by mob, voluntary grievous hurt, and mischief causing property damage.
