On Monday, October 5, 2026, the Congress party called for the immediate resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, arguing that his capacity to “execute G2’s illegal orders” has turned him into a liability for the country.
The call came after Congress general secretary in charge of communications, Jairam Ramesh, posted a video of Supreme Court judge Ujjal Bhuyan speaking at NALSAR University in Hyderabad. Ramesh accused the CEC of being a “lock, stock and barrel” and urged that if Bhuyan has any sense of shame, Kumar must quit. He further explained that the term “G2” is a reference to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.
Judge Bhuyan had earlier remarked that any process that disenfranchises millions of citizens is intrinsically arbitrary and a negation of the constitutional order. He emphasized that the right to vote is a constitutional right under Article 326 and cannot be withdrawn or treated as a mere statutory privilege. Bhuyan warned that such a process would make citizens second‑class and violate Articles 326 and 14.
The Congress also cited a report by The Indian Express that two election commissioners, Sandhu and Joshi, had objected at least fourteen times over the past ten months to decisions on the Special Intensive Revision process that were issued without their knowledge or recommendation. The Election Commission defended its actions, stating that differing views are part of institutional deliberations and that all orders are legally sanctioned.
In light of Bhuyan’s comments, the Congress claims that the CEC’s conduct has violated the Constitution in both letter and spirit, and therefore demands his resignation.
