A man linked to the murder of an assistant sub‑inspector was killed in a police encounter in Amritsar, officials said. The incident occurred on Saturday night after authorities had been pursuing suspects involved in the fatal shooting of ASI Harjit Singh.
Deepak Singh, a resident of Mulechak village, was identified as one of two motorcycle‑borne men who had gunned down ASI Harjit Singh at the Bhagtanwala grain market on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday. Police confirmed Singh’s involvement through a combination of CCTV footage, technical inputs, tower‑dump analysis, local intelligence and human sources.
The police signalled the two suspects on a scooter to stop at a checkpoint around 9.45 pm. One of the men allegedly opened fire at the police team and fled toward the next checkpoint, where he fired four rounds at officers. The police responded in self‑defence, according to officials.
During the exchange of fire near the Islamabad police station area, Deepak Singh sustained firearm injuries. He was immediately transported to a hospital, where he later succumbed to his wounds. The second suspect managed to escape, and police said forces were on the lookout to apprehend him. In the aftermath, officers recovered one pistol, two magazines and eight cartridges.
