In the Nagaon Lok Sabha by‑poll held on 6 October, BJP candidate Devasish Sharma secured an unassailable lead of 1,10,629 votes over AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal, according to the Election Commission.
Sharma, a former IAS officer, polled 4,20,705 votes. Ajmal received 3,10,076 votes, while Congress nominee Sibamoni Bora finished third with 75,908 votes, the EC said on its website.
Sharma dominated the four assembly segments of Morigaon, Raha, Jagiroad and Nagaon‑Batadrava, whereas Ajmal held the Muslim‑majority seats of Dhing, Samaguri, Laharighat and Rupahihat.
Counting began at 8 a.m. amid tight security. The process started with postal ballots, followed by EVM votes, and was conducted at two centres—Dawson Higher Secondary School and Nagaon Government Boys’ School—each with 14 tables.
The by‑poll was triggered by the resignation of Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi, who had won the seat earlier this year on a BJP ticket after contesting the assembly election from Dispur. Voter turnout was 76.19 per cent, and the result will not affect the balance of power in Parliament. The constituency has 19.05 lakh electors, including 9.43 lakh women and 50 third‑gender voters, across 2,312 polling stations.
