Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Indians on a 7.8% expansion of gross domestic product in the April‑June quarter, marking a faster pace than the 6.9% recorded in the same quarter last year but below the 8.6% growth of the preceding January‑March period. He highlighted the achievement as a testament to the nation’s resolve and collective effort.
Modi noted that the growth came despite wars, conflicts and a lack of global stability since the 2020 pandemic. He attributed the performance to government policies, the country’s push for self‑reliance and the strength of its people, while warning that some individuals were spreading negativity and falsehoods.
In the same address, the prime minister appealed for austerity measures to protect foreign‑exchange reserves. He urged citizens to refrain from buying gold and to limit foreign holidays and weddings unless essential. The appeal revisits a seven‑point austerity plan announced in May 2026, aimed at conserving foreign exchange amid energy and oil shortages linked to the West Asia conflict.
Modi emphasized that sustained focus on Swadeshi and self‑reliance would help deliver a developed India by the centenary of independence, fulfilling the aspirations of the country’s youth. He called for continued hard work and collective restraint to keep the growth momentum alive.
