An Australian trekker, Jordan Yap, 30, was found dead on a remote South American trail, his family announced on Saturday. Yap was last in contact with friends and family on 14 September before embarking on a planned 10‑day solo trek along Peru’s Huayhuash mountain range, 400 km northeast of Lima. The Cordillera Huayhuash circuit is known for its high‑altitude, challenging terrain and is considered a demanding trek through the remote Andes.
Yap’s friends and family grew concerned after he failed to check in at the Krusty hostel in Huaraz and missed a scheduled flight from Lima to Cusco. They also noted that he had misplaced a satellite beacon days before the 120‑km hike, adding to worries about his safety. The trek began near the circuit’s start, a difficult region that attracts experienced hikers.
In a social media post, his friends and family said, ‘With a heavy heart we are sorry to tell you Jordan has been found, and he did not survive.’ They thanked everyone who helped, including search teams, police and various groups that shared information online. The post urged people to remember Yap as a vibrant man who brought immense joy to many lives and wished him a peaceful rest.
A spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed that consular assistance was being provided to Yap’s family. The agency offered its deepest condolences but, citing privacy obligations, declined to give further comment. The news was reported by the Associated Press.
