A station officer posted at Walterganj police station in Basti district was discovered hanging in his government residence, which is situated adjacent to the Collectorate complex. The incident was reported on Saturday, August 30, according to the Basti range DIG Sanjeev Tyagi.
Tyagi said the officer, Surya Prakash Singh, 57, arrived at the residence with colleagues at 1 p.m. while other staff remained at the Civil Lines police outpost. Later that evening, a colleague entered Singh’s room and found him suspended from a ceiling fan. Police and a forensic team were promptly dispatched to the scene to conduct a detailed analysis.
Investigators recovered no suicide note, and the preliminary assessment described the case as a probable suicide. Senior officials, including DIG Tyagi, SP Yashveer Singh, the ASP and the circle officer, arrived at the location shortly after the discovery. Singh’s body was sent for a post‑mortem examination, and a broader investigation remains underway.
Police sources noted that Singh’s last WhatsApp status read, “Wealth is essential, but not more important than peace and love.” A native of Azamgarh district, he joined the police force in 1991 as a head constable and was promoted to sub‑inspector in 2014‑15. He is survived by his wife, two daughters and a son.
