Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Gurpreet Singh, known as Gopi, was shot dead by four armed assailants in Punjab’s Ferozepur district, police said on Sunday, August 30, 2026. Authorities linked the killing to a dispute arising from recent municipal elections.
The attackers, who arrived in a car, alighted in Mamdot’s main bazaar on the evening of Saturday, August 29, and opened fire on Singh, 45, and a 22‑year‑old companion identified as Harpreet alias Happy. Both men were riding a motorcycle at the time, contrary to earlier reports that suggested they were in a car. Vicky Maini, the newly appointed president of Mamdot Nagar Panchayat and a fellow AAP member, was following Singh in a separate vehicle. Maini was also targeted but escaped without injury.
Emergency services rushed the injured to the Civil Hospital, where Singh was pronounced dead. Harpreet was transferred to a private hospital in Ludhiana for further treatment.
Senior Superintendent of Police Bhupinder Singh announced that investigators have identified the suspects and deployed teams to apprehend them. The SSP described the murder as stemming from personal enmity tied to the recent Municipal Council elections.
Gurpreet Singh’s father, Balkar Singh, previously served as a Congress leader, and Singh’s sister‑in‑law was recently elected as a member of the Nagar Panchayat, underscoring the family’s involvement in local politics.
