A tragic incident occurred on the Agra-Delhi highway in the Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh on Saturday, resulting in the death of a municipal sanitation worker. The worker, identified as Omprakash, 45, was on his way to report for duty in Ward No 15 when a speeding tractor struck him from behind, killing him instantly. The incident sparked widespread outrage among sanitation workers, who staged a road blockade at the Bharatpur Gate intersection near the Kotwali police station.
The workers placed Omprakash’s body at the intersection and refused to let the police remove it, demanding compensation for the deceased’s dependents and the arrest of the tractor driver. According to SHO of Highway police station Arvind Kumar, the sanitation workers initially prevented the police from removing the body. However, as their numbers swelled, they took the body to the Bharatpur Gate intersection and blocked traffic, disrupting the flow of vehicles for several hours.
The blockade continued for about five hours, with the workers insisting on compensation for Omprakash’s family and strict action against the tractor driver responsible for the accident. The situation returned to normal after officials assured the workers that their demands would be met. The body of the deceased has been sent for a post-mortem examination, and efforts are underway to arrest the tractor driver, police said.
