Employees of Hindustan Machine Tools (HMT) in Kalamassery have sought the intervention of Rajya Sabha member John Brittas to resolve the prolonged financial crisis in the public sector unit. On Saturday, they submitted a memorandum to Mr. Brittas, highlighting their concerns. The HMT Employees Union (CITU) has been vocal about the issues faced by the employees, including delayed salaries and the urgent need for the implementation of the long-pending HMT revival package announced earlier.
According to the union, despite assurances made during a meeting with Union Heavy Industries Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy in December 2025, the revival package has not been implemented even after seven months. The union has also pointed out that a shortage of working capital and manpower has severely impacted production, despite the unit having orders worth ₹52 crore.
Furthermore, the suspension of employee bus services from August 1 and delays in retirement benefits for several former employees have worsened the situation. Mr. Brittas has assured the employees that he will take up the issue with the Centre.
