The Dimapur District Congress Committee (DCC) marked Black Day at Congress Bhavan in Dimapur on Thursday, condemning the alleged assault, detention and mistreatment of opposition leaders. The protest called for accountability from the Election Commission of India (ECI) and underscored the committee’s commitment to protecting the Constitution, democratic rights and free, fair elections.
In a statement, the DCC reiterated that while voices may be suppressed, democracy cannot be silenced. The committee’s message echoed the broader Congress stance on safeguarding democratic processes.
Earlier, on September 28, DCCs in Dimapur, Mokokchung, Wokha, Peren, Longleng, Noklak and Tuensang staged protests across their districts. They criticized what the Congress described as the high‑handed and arbitrary functioning of Chief Election Commissioner Shri Gyanesh Kumar, raising concerns over electoral roll decisions and the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.
The nationwide programme of the Indian National Congress seeks accountability for the Election Commission’s operations. The party demands the immediate resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner and an independent review of all decisions and electoral‑roll changes made during his tenure.
