The BJP candidate, former IAS officer Devasish Sharma, secured a decisive victory in the Nagaon Lok Sabha by‑poll, capturing roughly 50 percent of the votes cast. Sharma polled 6,97,177 votes, a margin of over 1.5 lakh ahead of the AIUDF nominee.
AIUDF’s Badruddin Ajmal finished second with a little over five lakh votes, about 38 percent of the total. The Congress candidate, Sibamoni Bora, trailed with just over 1.20 lakh votes, roughly 10 percent of the ballots. The election saw a turnout of about 76 percent, with 1,902,009 voters eligible to vote.
The constituency is dominated by a Muslim electorate that exceeds 60 percent of the voters. Historically, this demographic has favored Congress and AIUDF, yet the BJP achieved an unprecedented share of votes in Muslim‑majority assembly segments such as Rupahihat, Lahorighat, Dhing and Samaguri.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma hailed the result as a “decisive victory” for the BJP, attributing the success to development‑centric politics and the national agenda of the Narendra Modi‑led government. Former Congress MP Pradyot Bordoloi, who vacated the seat to contest the Assembly elections, praised the growth under NDA rule and blamed the opposition’s lack of connection with ground realities for their poor showing. The by‑poll featured 15 candidates in total.
