A man was shot by ICE officers in the Marble Hill neighborhood of the Bronx around 4 p.m. ET on Thursday. The NYPD said it was not involved. Mayor Zohran Mamdani called the incident unconscionable and demanded President Trump remove ICE agents from the city.
A DHS spokesperson confirmed ICE were conducting an operation to arrest a criminal illegal alien from the Dominican Republic who had a prior grand larceny conviction and multiple arrests for assault, robbery, drug possession and weapons. The suspect, allegedly linked to the Trinitarios gang, was injured after an ICE officer fired his weapon. He is alive and at a local hospital. ICE officers rendered aid and the FBI and Homeland Security Investigations are on the scene. The incident remains under investigation.
Witnesses reported hearing multiple shots and seeing masked ICE agents and police running down the street. One woman said she initially mistook the gunfire for a car backfiring before realizing it was gunshots. Governor Kathy Hochul asked federal authorities to provide a full and transparent account of the circumstances, stating that New Yorkers deserve to know what happened and why.
The shooting occurs amid criticism of Trump’s aggressive deportation campaign, which has seen other fatal encounters, such as the July shootings of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston and Joan Sebastian Guerrero in Maine. A Poliitico/Public First poll released in August found 49 percent of Americans believe the mass deportations are too aggressive, while 30 percent think they are about right. DHS defended the actions, saying that the lack of cooperation from sanctuary cities forces officers to arrest dangerous illegal aliens in unpredictable environments, and that such actions are necessary to protect public safety.
