In Shillong, Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Prestone Tynsong flagged off a motorcycle rally aimed at combating drug abuse. Five riders from the Meghalaya Police joined a pan‑India campaign that will cover more than 3,300 kilometres to Ekta Nagar in Gujarat. The event, themed “Fight Against Drugs,” brings together police forces, central armed police and other law‑enforcement organisations from across the country.
Tynsong said the long journey would demonstrate the seriousness of both the central and state governments in tackling the drug menace. He highlighted Meghalaya’s establishment of a dedicated Anti‑Narcotics Task Force headed by a senior police officer and its efforts to provide counselling and support for those affected by addiction.
Additional Director General of Police Anurag Agarwal noted that Meghalaya is primarily a transit state for drugs rather than a source, which complicates tracing the origin of narcotics. He urged the creation of stronger networks to identify external suppliers and called for stricter action against peddlers inside and outside the state.
Inspector General of Police Davis N. R. Marak explained that the rally is divided into four zones—North, Central, South and Northeast—and will culminate at Ekta Nagar, where participants will join the Ekta Diwas parade on 31 October as part of National Unity Day celebrations. The campaign seeks to raise public awareness and reinforce law‑enforcement efforts to curb drug supply and consumption.
