Shillong, Oct. 7 – Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma announced that the state will not take unilateral steps on the disputed Blocks I and II along the Assam border. He said any progress would come only after extensive consultations with local stakeholders.
Sangma added that the government will examine all aspects of the boundary issue, including historical landmarks cited in the April 13, 1951 notification that transferred the blocks to the United Mikir Hills District. The chief minister emphasized that the team would continue discussions while ensuring that all parties involved are consulted.
The chief minister reiterated that talks with Assam will proceed, stressing that decisions would be made only after securing the support and consensus of the people. He described the Block I and II dispute as one of the most complex interstate problems, noting that a collaborative approach is essential for a resolution.
Highlighting the NPP‑led government’s unique efforts, Sangma said that previous administrations had largely avoided addressing the dispute. He also reported that police outposts have been established or are being set up in almost all contested areas to safeguard residents and their land in Meghalaya’s peripheral regions.
