Merangkong village’s Medemsanger Putu Menden (MPM) issued a strong rebuke on October 3 against statements made by NSCN (I‑M) leaders VS Atem and RH Raising that criticized former chief minister and former governor Dr SC Jamir. The condemnation came in a press release issued by MPM secretary Temjennungsang, who emphasized that freedom of expression is a core Naga custom and must be protected.
MPM argued that no individual has the right to curtail or deny another’s right to express views, especially at a time when the Naga community is striving for reconciliation, peace and unity. The organization expressed concern that the remarks from Atem and Raising were divisive and detracted from efforts to build a collective political solution.
The organization stated that the inherent rights of all Naga people, regardless of social status, should be respected and upheld. MPM urged that the community cultivate goodwill and mutual respect to move forward as one people.
MPM also expressed solidarity with statements issued by Ao Senden and Ungma Senso Mungdang, which support the broader interests of the Naga community.
Finally, MPM expressed hope that wisdom would guide the resolution of the controversy, ensuring that the larger goals of reconciliation and unity are not diluted by the dispute.
