A 42‑year‑old man from Perumkuzhy named Saji died on Monday after reportedly collapsing at his home. His death came a few days after he was said to have been assaulted by police officers on October 2, according to his family.
Saji’s relatives claim that he had intervened when police allegedly attacked a neighbour outside his house. They say he was then beaten by the officers and left in a weakened state. He remained bedridden at home and was receiving treatment at a hospital in Chirayinkeezhu until his death.
The family alleges that the assault was carried out under the leadership of the Chirayinkeezhu Circle Inspector. They have filed a complaint with the Attingal Deputy Superintendent of Police and are seeking action against the officers involved.
In addition to the complaint, the relatives staged a protest to demand accountability for the incident.
