Counting of votes for elections to the village committees under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) will begin on Monday at 8 a.m. in Agartala, with tight security arrangements in place, officials said on Sunday. The elections, held on September 28 for 587 village committees in the Sixth Schedule areas, saw an 81 per cent voter turnout.
The State Election Commission’s secretary, Anurag Sen, confirmed that the vote‑counting exercise will take place in 44 centres across all eight districts. He added that the process may proceed slowly because ballots were issued in paper form, a standard practice for local body elections. Despite the tight security, officials are prepared for a smooth conduct of the counting.
Of the 4,597 seats across the 587 committees, 2,950 were contested. The remaining 1,644 seats were won unopposed by the Tipra Motha Party (TMP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In total, 8,176 candidates from parties such as TMP, BJP, CPI(M), Congress and the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) stood for election.
TMP leader Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma urged residents to refrain from violence during the counting period. In a Facebook post, he noted that after a decade’s wait, the village council elections were held and appealed to all Tiprasa people to keep the villages peaceful during and after the counting.
