Manipur CM travels to Delhi amid deputy rift

Manipur Chief Minister Y. Khemchand Singh departed from Imphal for New Delhi on Wednesday afternoon, following reports that central BJP leaders are intervening to resolve a growing dispute between his two deputy chief ministers.

Deputy chief ministers Losii Dikho and Nemcha Kipgen are expected to travel to the capital as well. The CM had previously requested a meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and is likely to meet other BJP leaders to address issues facing the restive state.

Hindustan Times reports that BJP leadership has called the CM and his deputies to a high‑level meeting, which would be the first face‑to‑face encounter between Dikho and Kipgen since the rift emerged. The meeting could help calm tensions that threaten the coalition’s stability.

The discord began after Naga civil society organisations demanded Kipgen’s removal following the May abduction and killing of six Naga members by Kuki armed groups in Kangpokpi district. When the mutilated bodies were recovered in June, the United Naga Council accused cadres of Kipgen’s husband‑led KNF(P) militant group, urging her ouster. On September 1, the Naga Legislators’ Forum, of which Dikho is a member, wrote to Amit Shah alleging collusion between Kipgen and Kuki militants and warned that her presence was hampering the peace process. The rift widened when Naga legislators boycotted the last sitting of the Assembly, refusing to share space with Kipgen, who attended virtually, and when Dikho missed three cabinet meetings attended by Kipgen online.
