Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Sunday that two individuals had been arrested for allegedly passing security‑related information to Pakistan. The arrests were made following intelligence supplied by central agencies.
One of the arrested persons is a retired army jawan who is currently employed on a contractual basis with the army. The chief minister said the Assam Police had taken the men into custody after receiving input from the central agencies.
Sarma said the suspects were in contact with Pakistan and were providing details about army movements. He added that the men would be handed over to the central agencies for further action.
The other suspect, identified as Abhishek Kumar Singh from Purba Champaran in Bihar, was apprehended by the Assam Special Task Force (STF) in a rented house in Guwahati. The STF, in coordination with Sonitpur police, had gathered evidence of his alleged espionage activities, including the transmission of secret information to a Pakistani intelligence operative (PIO). During the operation, a mobile phone, SIM cards and incriminating documents were seized.
The police stated that a preliminary input about Singh was provided by the Military Intelligence of the Gajraj Corps in Tezpur. Further investigation is underway as the authorities continue to assess the extent of the espionage network.
