The Meghalaya government marked Gandhi Jayanti on Friday by presenting floral tributes to the statue of Mahatma Gandhi at the Main Secretariat’s Rilang Building.
Principal Secretary of Arts and Culture and Home (Police) FR Kharkongor, Commissioner and Secretary Vijay Kumar Mantri, and Meghalaya Administrative Training Institute Director Swapnil Tembe attended the ceremony along with senior officers and secretariat staff.
During the gathering, officials recalled Gandhi’s principles of truth, peace, and non‑violence, and pledged to apply these values in their public service duties.
In a separate event, Governor CH Vijayashankar, together with officials and staff of Lok Bhavan in Shillong, commemorated the 157th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the 122nd birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, and observed the International Day of Non‑Violence.
The Governor highlighted the lasting relevance of Gandhi’s philosophy of truth, compassion, and self‑less service, noting that his message of peace, tolerance, dialogue, and coexistence is especially crucial amid growing conflict, inequality, and environmental challenges. He also remembered Shastri’s contributions, urging citizens to draw inspiration from the dedication, humility, and public‑service values exemplified by both leaders.
