Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan said on Saturday that Kozhikode is under active consideration for an All‑India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Kerala, responding to a request from MP M.K. Raghavan and MLAs K. Praveenkumar, K. Jayanth, and V.T. Sooraj.
The representatives argued that an AIIMS would relieve the Malabar region’s shortage of tertiary health services. They highlighted the need for advanced medical facilities in the area.
The Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation has already transferred 151.58 acres of land at Kinalur to the government, while the remaining approximately 100 acres are still pending acquisition. Establishing the institute there would serve about 1.5 crore residents across seven districts, from Kasaragod to Thrissur.
The representatives also voiced concern that the project might be shifted to a site outside Kozhikode. They noted that the district has consistently been the top priority in communications with the Union government, and that moving the location would dampen the hopes of the people of Malabar and trigger strong public sentiment.
