An internal safety audit carried out by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) found that only 16 of its 736 parks—about 2 percent—are equipped with CCTV cameras, according to a statement released after a 17‑year‑old was gang‑raped last month by men masquerading as police.
The audit was ordered by Delhi’s local government chief, Tranjit Singh Sandhu, last week. The DDA has classified its parks into high (190), medium (258) and low (288) risk categories to guide priority interventions.
High‑risk parks are receiving immediate action. Bike patrols have already begun, and armed guards will be deployed in 134 parks. The DDA will also install additional lighting in 520 parks, with 231 projects already underway and 106 completed.
Other security upgrades include converting 163 gates from unlockable to lockable, installing CCTV cameras in 323 additional parks, and implementing biometric attendance for security guards in 602 parks. Contact details of local police and beat officers have been distributed to field staff, and incident‑reporting sensitization is being carried out across all parks.
