The Congress has announced its candidates for three seats in the Maharashtra Legislative Council, ahead of the biennial elections scheduled for October 23. Five seats are vacant: three Graduate seats in Aurangabad, Pune and Nagpur, and two Teacher seats in Amravati and Pune.
In a press release issued on Friday, the party confirmed that Abhijit Wanjari will stand again for the Nagpur Graduate seat, Jayant Dinkar Asagaonkar will contest the Pune Teacher seat, and newcomer Aditi Pohare will run for the Amravati Teacher seat. Candidates may file nominations on October 6, with the withdrawal deadline set for October 9.
Earlier this week, the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) announced plans to contest the same elections. A meeting was held that included Congress leader Naseem Khan, NCP (SP) leaders Shashikant Shinde and Harshwardhan Patil, and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut. Discussions focused on the Graduate constituencies of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Pune, as well as the Teacher constituency of Amravati.
The NCP’s Satish Chavan (Graduate Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar), Arun Lad (Graduate Pune), and Shiv Sena’s Kiran Sarnaik (Teacher Amravati) will retire from their seats on December 6, clearing the way for new candidates to contest the upcoming elections.
