Three new judges are likely to be appointed to the Supreme Court of India next week, according to sources familiar with the appointment process. The Supreme Court collegium recommended the elevation of three high‑court chief justices on September 29.
The judges slated for elevation are Justice Sunita Agarwal, chief justice of the Gujarat High Court; Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya, chief justice of the Delhi High Court; and Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh, chief justice of the Telangana High Court. Once they take their oaths, the number of sitting judges will rise to 37, one seat short of the court’s sanctioned capacity.
At present, the Supreme Court has 34 judges, including the Chief Justice of India. The sanctioned strength was increased from 34 to 38 by the Supreme Court Amendment Act, 2026. The upcoming appointments will bring the total to 37.
These appointments represent the second set of additions to the court after the sanctioned strength was raised, following the earlier increase in 2026.
