Captain Smit Machchhar, an Indian pilot, saved more than 170 passengers on flydubai flight FZ1073 when he confronted an attack by his co‑pilot. The incident forced the aircraft to divert to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, and left Smit with serious injuries, including a fractured hand and multiple cuts.
Smit’s sister‑in‑law, Neerava Jogi, told IANS that the family received an outpouring of appreciation and prayers. She said, “We are receiving a lot of appreciation and are quite overwhelmed by it… We sincerely thank everyone for all the love and prayers he is receiving. We feel very humbled.” Jogi also confirmed that the pilot is recovering, noting that the first 24 to 36 hours were stressful because no family member could meet him.
When Prime Minister Narendra Modi called to speak with Smit, Jogi described the family’s reaction: “Everyone became very emotional when PM Modi spoke to him.” The pilot himself was moved and said that Modi was a role model. Jogi added that the family was relieved that Smit was stable and grateful for the nationwide support.
BJP MLA Atul Bhatkhalkar visited the family in Mumbai, and Jaysukh Jogi expressed gratitude for the MLA’s presence. He said, “He is always there for everyone, ready to stand by them. We are very happy that he is standing with us at this moment as well.” Ankit Jogi noted that the visit was a source of pride and that the family feels supported by prominent leaders.
