Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya urged the youth to pursue meaningful goals and stay away from drug use. Speaking in Guwahati on September 30, he emphasized that a clear purpose can lead to a positive future.
The remarks were part of the governor’s statewide ‘Nasha Mukt Bharat Sankalp Padayatra’, a de‑addiction campaign. The Hojai leg began with a tree‑planting event at Rabindranath Thakur Vishwavidyalaya, after which Acharya addressed a public meeting, stressing that the message would spread across communities.
He described the padayatra as a journey of resolve, awareness and hope, aiming to channel youth energy into constructive pursuits and safeguard families and society. He recalled the sacrifices of freedom fighters and urged the younger generation to build a healthy, prosperous, self‑reliant nation.
Acharya highlighted the crucial role of schools, colleges and universities in raising awareness about the dangers of substance abuse. He called on parents, teachers, youth and social organisations to create a sustained environment of dialogue and support, and encouraged engagement in sports, yoga, cultural activities, NCC, NSS, community service and skill development.
The padayatra concluded with the governor administering the ‘Nasha Mukt Bharat Sankalp’ pledge to participants, who reaffirmed their commitment to a drug‑free society. He also visited the home of 101‑year‑old Upendra Biswas, presenting him with the ‘Varishtha Nagrik Samman’ and a cheque of Rs 51,000, while offering traditional gifts and prayers for his long life.
