On September 30, 2005, the Garo Student’s Union Eastern Zone in Williamanagar, East Garo Hills, requested a public holiday for all schools and colleges. The union approached the heads of private, government, aided, and deficit institutions, as well as the authorities responsible for education.
The union also asked the Meghalaya Board of School Education to suspend classes in the Tura and Williamnagar areas and requested local police to enforce the closure.
The protest was scheduled for September 30, coinciding with the observances of “Black Friday” and “Martyrs Day” in Williamnagar Rongrenggre. The union planned demonstrations lasting 2 to 5 days, with a three‑day rally in Williamnagar Rongrenggre to pressure authorities.
The union called on civil society to support the movement and urged the Garo Student’s Union to be recognized for its efforts. They emphasized the need for a temporary halt in education to address the issues raised.
