Gauhati University on Tuesday defended its handling of the 2026‑27 Post‑Graduate Students’ Union (PGSU) election, rejecting what it called “inaccurate and misleading information” about the nomination and grievance process.
The university said all decisions concerning nominations were taken on the basis of official records and through the prescribed institutional mechanisms, including the Returning Officer, Election Tribunal, Appeal Hearing Committee and Grievances Redressal Cell. Registrar Prof Utpal Sarma emphasized that the matter was dealt with through established procedures and that no individual student was targeted.
Concerns over the eligibility of candidates Nayan Akash Bora and Pratik Sharma were raised during a nomination scrutiny on 23 September. The Election Tribunal advised that their nominations should not be considered, and the subsequent Election Notification‑5/2026 recorded the cancellation of their nominations. Bora appealed on 25 and 26 September; an Appeal Hearing Committee was constituted on 26 September, and the hearing was video‑recorded before findings were communicated. A Grievances Redressal Cell was formed on 27 September.
The university also addressed a dual‑enrolment issue, noting that the student in question had been pursuing two postgraduate programmes under the fee‑waiver category and had maintained hostel accommodation in both programmes, with one status remaining active. University Classes Secretary Dr Ranjan Kumar Kakati said the process followed the prescribed framework and urged students to rely on verified information and maintain peace during the election.
