A minor breach was detected in the embankment along the Gandak River in West Champaran district, Bihar, on Monday evening, raising concerns about potential flooding in nearby villages.
The breach occurred at chainage 4 km near Khairtwa village in the Bagaha‑1 block after the river’s water level rose about 35 cm above its previous highest flood level of 90.90 metres. The water is now entering agricultural fields and is expected to re‑enter the Gandak at chainage 9.5 km.
Low‑lying areas of Agastiya, Khairtwa and Chandrapur villages may be affected, and connectivity could be disrupted, according to a statement from the Water Resources Department. The nearby National Highway 727, located roughly 3 km from the breach, is not expected to be significantly impacted as the river’s flow in that area is receding rapidly.
A department team has reached the site and is working to repair the embankment, while the West Champaran district administration has taken necessary measures to address the situation.
