A day after students protested at Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Phagwara, Punjab, over an allegation that a female student had been raped on campus, traffic on National Highway 44 was restored on Monday, September 28, 2026, according to police officials.
Police said the situation had been brought under control. An FIR charging an unknown person with rape was registered, and a special investigation team was formed. The police also reported that some officers were injured and vehicles damaged during clashes that followed the protest.
LPU announced a ten‑day suspension of regular classes and postponed mid‑term examinations. The university denied the rape allegation, stating that rumours were false and released a video of three students claiming no incident occurred. Vice‑Chancellor Jaspal Singh Sandhu and founder‑chancellor Ashok Mittal were called upon by protesters to assure action.
Senior Superintendent of Police Gaurav Toora said the gathering was triggered by rumours and that grievances against the administration were being addressed. The incident follows a protest at Chitkara University in Patiala, where police later found the suicide allegations unfounded. Police reports indicate the situation has remained peaceful since the night before.
