The Election Commission of India (ECI) has lodged a complaint against the Indian National Congress, alleging that the party is conducting a campaign against the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC). The complaint was filed in Shillong, where the MPCC has expressed concerns that the ECI is interfering in intra‑party matters. MPCC president Vincent H Pala said that the party’s activities are being scrutinised by the commission and that the ECI’s involvement is unwarranted.

Pala cited the presence of election commissioners Sukhbir Singh and Vivek Joshi in the matter and said that the commission is attempting to influence voter behaviour. He accused the commission of using intimidation tactics, referring to the term “kalakna” which he said indicates coercion. Pala also warned that the commission’s actions could undermine the democratic process within the state.

The MPCC has also raised concerns about the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll. Pala said that the SIR is being used to target voters in states such as Haryana, Maharashtra and West Bengal, and that the Delhi CEC office is involved in manipulating the data. He argued that the revised rolls could be used to blackmail voters and disrupt the electoral process.

The Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar, has stated that he is monitoring the situation and that the ECI will keep an eye on the MPCC president. He also said that the commission will investigate any irregularities in the SIR process. Congress units, including the Youth Congress and Mahila Congress, have reportedly been involved in the campaign, according to Pala, and the MPCC has called for a review of the commission’s actions.
