On September 25, the Assam Police arrested two individuals suspected of being Bangladeshi nationals aboard the Saraihat Express between Silchar and Howrah. The suspects were intercepted by border police during the train’s journey, according to officials in Guwahati.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Border) Kulandra Nath Deka said that during interrogation the officers recovered two Aadhaar cards believed to be forged and Bangladeshi currency notes from the suspects. The police have begun the legal process to deport the individuals under the Immigrants (Expulsion from Assam) Act, 1950.
The arrest followed intelligence about the movement of suspected illegal foreigners. The Border Police wing is conducting checks to identify foreign nationals without valid documents or who use forged Indian identity papers. Earlier this week the police detained 28 suspected Bangladeshi nationals in separate operations across the state, and on September 23 a residence in Mankachar yielded six more detainees while 22 were caught on September 22.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reiterated the state’s commitment to preventing illegal entry from Bangladesh and to identifying unlawful residents. He noted that Assam Police had foiled an infiltration attempt on September 19 and that two convicted persons were transferred to the Border Security Force, which then handed them over to Border Guards Bangladesh following protocol. The government will remain vigilant along the international border.
