The Central Executive Council of the Achik Society for Ownership of Native Grounds (ASONG) and the Deputy Commissioner of South Garo Hills District announced a press release concerning the NH‑217 Darugre‑Baghmara‑Dalu project. The statement highlighted the involvement of the district administration’s civil body responsible for Right of Way (RoW) matters and clarified that the project is being undertaken under the National Highways Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL).
A key point of the release is the planned reduction of the RoW width for the highway from 24 metres to 18 metres. The adjustment is intended to minimise disruption to surrounding communities, reduce the impact on existing pipelines and utilities, and streamline the construction process. The change is expected to ease land acquisition concerns and improve the overall efficiency of the project.
According to the announcement, the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for NH‑217 is scheduled for completion on 30 September 2026. The DPR will lay out the technical specifications, cost estimates and procurement strategy, including the tender process for the upcoming construction phase. The release stresses the importance of timely execution and compliance with national highway standards.
The project also involves local stakeholders such as the FKJGP, the Garo Student Union (GSU) Siju Regional Unit, and other community organisations in South Garo Hills. Technical inspectors from NHIDCL will oversee the work on the Tura‑Dalu and Shillong‑Baghmara corridors, ensuring that the project meets safety and environmental guidelines. ASONG’s participation is expected to support transparent land rights management and protect the interests of indigenous residents throughout the construction period.
