A new bakery unit, named Nava Sankalpa Bakery, has been inaugurated at Bengaluru Central Prison to generate revenue for the government and equip inmates with skills that can help them rebuild their lives after release.
The bakery was launched by Alok Kumar, Director General of Police, Department of Prisons and Correctional Services, on September 17. During the ceremony he also flagged off a mobile version of the unit, the Nava Sankalpa Bakery on Wheels, at the Maximum Security Prison in Parappana Agrahara. The project was carried out in collaboration with the HCL Foundation, and Kumar posted photographs of the event on the social‑media platform X, thanking the foundation for its assistance.
After the launch, DGP Kumar inspected the products produced by the bakery and praised their taste and quality. He met with inmates, stressing that quality and hygiene must remain a priority in all preparations. The prison will award certificates to new convict inmates who complete the training programme. In addition, Kumar directed that the bakery’s goods be sold through the mobile unit at various court premises and bus stands across Bengaluru.
The initiative aims to produce high‑quality bakery items inside the prison and sell them to the public, thereby creating a revenue stream for the government. At the same time, the programme is designed to give inmates practical experience and a marketable skill set that will support their reintegration into society after release. Later in the day, Kumar also visited sections of the prison housing under‑trial inmates to inspect security arrangements.
