The deteriorating condition of the NH‑2 alternative road at Dzuphileiyi in Phesama village, Kohima district, has drawn growing concern from commuters and transporters, especially during rainfall.
The narrow stretch becomes difficult to navigate when wet, with potholes and mud making movement hazardous. Its limited width frequently forces vehicles to struggle to pass each other or become stuck, leading to congestion and delays.
Drivers report that the poor condition, combined with uneven sections, could cause serious accidents if a vehicle suffers a mechanical failure while negotiating the route. Repeated travel over damaged sections also contributes to mechanical problems and forces vehicles to proceed slowly, increasing travel time.
Another issue is the reported violation of vehicle‑load restrictions imposed by the Phesama Youth Organization, which directs vehicles using the alternative road to carry only half loads. Despite the restriction, several vehicles are reportedly exceeding the permitted limit, and the combination of overloaded vehicles and weak infrastructure could accelerate deterioration and pose additional risks to road users.
