Mizoram Minister Supports Hindi Learning Without Cultural Compromise

Hindi Diwas was observed in Mizoram on Monday, with Greenhill Public School in Aizawl organising a Hindi concert at Vanapa Hall to mark the occasion. The event was attended by the state’s Governor and Education Minister.

Governor Dr Vijay Kumar Singh, PVSM, AVSM, YSM (Retd), served as chief guest, while Education Minister Dr Vanlalthlana was the guest of honour.

In his address, Governor Singh highlighted the importance of learning Hindi as part of educational transformation, insisting that such change must remain rooted in cultural values. He praised Mizoram’s talent and urged students to acquire additional languages, noting that proficiency could aid education, employment, business and tourism. He warned that mistakes are inevitable but essential to learning, and welcomed the government’s plan to introduce a monthly Hindi‑speaking day in schools. He also called for students to study other communities’ cultures, read widely, and develop a deeper understanding of India’s history, while preserving their own language, traditions and heritage. He stressed that academic excellence alone is insufficient in a rapidly changing world and urged the cultivation of knowledge, skills, good character, confidence, discipline, compassion and a sense of responsibility toward society and the nation.

Education Minister Dr Vanlalthlana said India’s linguistic diversity makes language learning especially important. He noted that proficiency in Hindi, spoken by a large section of the country, could facilitate communication and professional interactions across regions. He emphasised that Hindi can be learned and used effectively without compromising Mizo culture, traditions and values. He added that language learning should focus on spoken proficiency rather than exam performance. Referring to the Mizoram Education Reform Committee’s recommendations, he said the committee had proposed a one‑day‑a‑month Hindi‑speaking day in schools, guidebooks had been issued and implementation was underway.
