Shillong – Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma distributed one‑time relocation grants to vendors who have been moved to the Barik and Dhanketi areas as part of a city beautification initiative.
Under the assistance scheme each vendor receives a total of Rs 20,000. Ten thousand rupees are transferred immediately through Direct Benefit Transfer, followed by a monthly payment of Rs 2,000 for the next five months.
Speaking at the distribution, Sangma highlighted that the relocation was made possible through the cooperation of all stakeholders. He noted that while the step may appear simple, it presents a significant challenge because it involves both development and the livelihoods of the vendors, as well as the aesthetic improvement of the city. Prime locations have been assigned to the relocated vendors to balance their economic needs with the visual appeal of Shillong’s roads and streets. The chief minister urged tourists and residents to visit the new vending zones, which will be developed into vibrant spaces featuring toilet facilities, seating areas, decorative lighting and evening performances.
The programme was attended by Arts and Culture Minister and South Shillong MLA Sanbor Shullai, East Shillong MLA Dr M Ampareen Lyngdoh, and officials from the Urban Affairs department.
