A Manipur Rifles havaldar, currently attached to the Imphal West Manipur Police Commando, died after shooting himself at a family quarter in Imphal West on Monday, police officials said.
The incident occurred around 4.15 pm at a family quarter inside the Commando Complex, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Imphal Police Station. The havaldar was taken to Raj Medicity Hospital with gunshot wounds and was later declared dead.
He was originally from Khumajamba Leikai in Churachandpur and had been displaced with his family since ethnic conflict erupted in the state in May 2023. The exact reason behind the incident has not yet been determined.
The death comes amid ongoing discussions in the Manipur Assembly about the rehabilitation of internally displaced persons. Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh noted that about 36,000 displaced people have been resettled from a total of 60,000 IDPs, leaving roughly 24,000 still in relief camps.
