In New Delhi on 9 September, the Election Commission of India released expenditure statements that detail the receipts and balances of major political parties during the recent state Assembly elections held from 15 March to 6 May. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) reported net receipts of Rs 1,472.8 crore at its central headquarters during the election period.
The BJP’s central headquarters closing balance was Rs 7,627.2 crore on 6 May, up from Rs 6,722.6 crore on 15 March, an increase of Rs 904.6 crore. Expenditure reports for the party’s Kerala and West Bengal campaigns are still pending; consolidated figures will be available once those are filed.
The Congress submitted a consolidated report covering its central unit and state units in Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Puducherry. The party reported net receipts of Rs 207.17 crore and an expenditure of Rs 248.55 crore for the same period. Its balance fell from Rs 169.06 crore at the start of the election window to about Rs 103.2 crore by 6 May.
These statements provide a snapshot of funds received and spent by each party’s units during the election window. The Commission publishes them to promote transparency in campaign financing, and further details for individual state units are expected as filing and scrutiny complete.
