Mayawati, president of the Bahujan Samaj Party, warned on Sunday that the Gen‑Z movement, which focuses on the problems of young people and the unemployed, is being hijacked by political parties. She said the movement’s original intent has been diluted, creating doubts among youth and students.
In a post on X, the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister cited several cases across the country that led people to believe the CJP’s Gen‑Z movement had become a political tool rather than an independent platform. She recalled how the Jantar Mantar protest had once offered “big dreams” to young activists, but now these aspirations are undermined by alleged takeover by political groups.
Mayawati stressed that the BSP has always supported the legitimate demands of Gen‑Z and Gen‑Alpha. She instructed all BSP state units to engage with authorities in their regions to help resolve young people’s concerns peacefully. At the same time, she urged party workers to refrain from participating in dharnas or demonstrations, reserving their “physical, mental and financial strength” for elections. The party’s goal, she said, is to form a government based on “Sarvajan Hitay, Sarvajan Sukhay” and to provide lasting solutions for all sections of society.
She also referred to the alleged assault of Sanjay Azad, father of a minor activist, during the Gen‑Z movement at Jantar Mantar. The incident, she said, could have been avoided if police had acted swiftly. Mayawati demanded the strictest legal action against those involved and pledged that the BSP would continue to raise its voice on such matters if necessary. The assailant, Hindutva influencer Swatantra Bhardwaj, was arrested after boasting about the assault and claiming impunity due to ties with BJP leaders and a minister.
