In a meeting held in Shillong on Tuesday, Assam border protection and development minister Atul Bora said transporters from Assam and Meghalaya have reaffirmed that safety, security and free movement of citizens remain paramount. Bora emphasized that both sides agreed on the importance of continued coordination, dialogue and timely intervention to prevent misunderstandings and address emerging concerns.
Senior officials and representatives of transport organisations from both states attended the meeting, which was chaired by Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar along with Bora. The gathering focused on concerns related to the safe and unhindered movement of vehicles and people between the two states.
The discussion followed bilateral talks between the two state governments in Guwahati on August 22 and addressed incidents on August 19 involving Assam‑registered vehicles in Shillong. Bora noted that Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had promptly raised the matter with Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, and that sustained engagement has restored normalcy and strengthened confidence on the ground.
Bora stressed that the relationship between Assam and Meghalaya extends beyond administrative boundaries, citing deep social, cultural and economic ties. He thanked both chief ministers for their decisive leadership and personal attention in finding a constructive resolution, and expressed gratitude for their continued commitment to protecting enduring bonds of friendship, harmony and brotherhood.
