Bengaluru‑based orthopaedic surgeon John Ebenezer delivered the Professor S. Radhakrishnan and Dr. D.C. Pavate Memorial Fundamental Lecture on “Beyond Education: Towards a Complete and Healthy Life” at the Senate Hall of Karnatak University Dharwad to mark Teachers’ Day.
During the lecture Ebenezer stressed the need for holistic education, saying students must be strengthened mentally, physically, culturally, spiritually, socially and emotionally in addition to gaining domain knowledge. He warned that students are experiencing increasing mental stress and addiction due to technology, and that student‑centred, holistic education is essential.
He added that technology has transformed learning but that greater emphasis must be placed on physical activity and mental health. Teachers, he said, have a major responsibility to develop critical thinking, self‑confidence and good values among students.
Chief guest R.H. Gunaki praised Dr. D.C. Pavate as a visionary educationist who rose from a poor village background to national and international recognition as a mathematician, Vice‑Chancellor and administrator. He noted Pavate studied at the University of Cambridge and authored mathematics books, and established facilities such as the Botanical Gardens and student hostels at the university.
Karnatak University Vice‑Chancellor A.M. Khan highlighted the importance of teacher cooperation for the university’s progress. Thirteen internationally recognised teachers were felicitated, and a book titled “Dr. D.C. Pavate as an Administrator” was released at the event.
