The Annamayya district administration has devised an action plan to mitigate potential drinking water shortages caused by El Niño‑induced dry conditions. The plan aims to maximise the storage of every available water source across the district.
District Collector Nishant Kumar told reporters on Tuesday that officials have been instructed to prepare in advance for the next release of Handri‑Neeva Sujala Sravanthi (HNSS) water. The directive requires the diversion of the water into district tanks, with channels, feeder canals and routes to the tanks cleared and repaired so that no water is lost during transit.
The district possesses roughly 3,700 minor irrigation tanks in addition to borewells, and officials have been told to use these resources efficiently to enhance groundwater recharge. Under the Jaladhara programme, nearly 430 water‑conservation works are underway. Field inspections have been ordered to identify incomplete projects and remove obstructions.
According to the action plan, officials will monitor drinking‑water schemes continuously, identify habitations that face inadequate supply, and keep alternative sources ready. The Collector added that coordinating departments are directed to work closely, conserve rainwater, and manage HNSS supplies to prevent future drinking‑water crises during the upcoming summer months.
